New year, new me = 💩🤷🏽‍♀️

If you can’t tell by the title, I am not a fan of the “New year, new me” fad that fades out by February 1st 😂 Folks be someone new for a whole 30 days until they revert back to their true selves! 🤷🏽‍♀️

nm gi HOWEVER, I am a fan of setting personal and professional goals for the year and KILLIN’ them jawns! I think of it like this: If you don’t set a goal, how do you know when you achieved it? Let that marinate…

One of the top ways I find success with tackling goals is by making them S.M.A.R.T.!

What are S.M.A.R.T. goals?

They are goals that are specific, measurable, assignable, results-focused, and time bound. According to,

  • Specific – target a specific area for improvement.
  • Measurable – quantify or at least suggest an indicator of progress.
  • Assignable – specify who will do it.
  • Realistic – state what results can realistically be achieved, given available resources.
  • Time-related – specify when the result(s) can be achieved.

For example, you want to lose those extra pounds you found at the bottom of the macaroni pan and second helping of peach cobbler, (me too boo boo, me too!)

Create a S.M.A.R.T. goal:

Example Goal: I want to lose 20 pounds by March 1st to improve my overall health and physical appearance. I will do this by eating healthy and working out at least 3x a week. (between you and I… come closer, shhh, this is low key a real goal for me. I need to be snatched for my birthday on March 31st! I am trying to be on somebody’s beach hunty!

Specific: Goals should be simplistically written and clearly define what you are going to do. What, why and how?

Measurable: Goals should be measurable so that you have tangible evidence that you have accomplished the goal. Usually, the entire goal statement is a measure for the project, but there are usually several short-term or smaller measurements built into the goal

Stay on track with your goal by quantifying a measurable path of your success. Each week weighing in on a set day in the morning to see if you are on track to achieving your goal. If not, what changes do you need to make?

Assignable: This would primarily pertain more to goals with other parties involved but it assists with setting a clear standard upfront with such goals. No surprises on who is supposed to be doing what and when. For a personal goal, you can assign yourself with specific deadlines to break up the big goal i.e lose 2 lbs every week, workout 3x a week, one cheat day etc.

Realistic: Goals should be achievable; they should stretch you slightly so you feel challenged, but defined well enough so that you can achieve them.You must possess the appropriate knowledge, skills, and abilities needed to achieve the goal.

Make sure they are realistic. Girl, you not going lose 20 lbs in one week – naturally. It’s. Not. Going. To. Happen!

You may lose a whole hunch a bunch of water weight after shocking your body but not 20 true pounds. Don’t even set yourself up for failure just to be disappointed and say “Eff this, I’m just going eat this double cheeseburger!” LOL Chile, we ALL been there!

With that being said, set achievable goals that will help to keep you motivated! Normally, you can lose up to 1-2lbs naturally in a week which is 4-8lbs in a month. If you start in January, you can aim to lose 12-24 lbs by March 1st.

Time-bound: Goals should be linked to a timeframe that creates a practical sense of urgency, or results in tension between the current reality and the vision of the goal. Without such tension, the goal is unlikely to produce a relevant outcome.

You don’t want to set your completion date out too far where it becomes aloof and your lose interest. Can you lose 20lbs in 1 year? course but if you know you have a WHOLE year to do it, you’re not going to be as motivated to complete it.

Most importantly, have fun with it!

You should be excited to set your goals and checking them off throughout the year!

If you’re not measuring your achievements, you won’t be able celebrate them! It’s such an euphoric experience being able to know where you started and where you finished! Started from the bottom now we hea’!
